I just figured out why I never really liked baseball. According to this article, the average baseball game takes almost 3 hours, but out of those 3 hours, the ball is actually in play only roughly 10 minutes!! Meaning that 95% of a baseball game, basically absolutely nothing is happening.

Son, as your father I simply must say it: as Jesus said to the Sadducees - "You are badly mistaken."

1. The 170 minutes of the game when the ball is not in play are chocked full of strategic decisions. (Do we bring in the left-hander to face the next batter? Do we hit-and-run, or steal, or pitch-out, or.....)

2. Baseball was never intended to bring constant excitement (like soccer, or basketball, or ice hockey). It was intended to allow time to get a hot dog and/or beer and include some relaxation as well.

I know I have opened myself up for all sorts of feeback here, but so be it.

Good thoughts, as spoken by a true (former) baseball fan.

It's just that exactly fact #2 is why it never did the trick for me - relaxation is good and all, but 170 minutes is a bit much. Sure, there may be important strategic decisions going on during off play, but the decisions are far less obvious than in, say, football, where probably a majority of the game time is also off play, but probably only 60% rather than 95%.
